Learning to communicate through A3

Is it better to talk little but say a lot or talk a lot and say nothing?

According to Lean Thinking, poor communication represents a waste of resources and causes unacceptable delays, and this frequently conceals a lack of mental discipline. For Japanese Senseis “to think and communicate A3” means boiling complex problems or situations down to their simplest elements, so that they can be communicated on one sheet of A3 paper (about 30×40 cm). Thanks to A3 management, a tool as simple as it is effective, the deviation from relying on reporting and increasing the degree of complexity of the problem resolution processes (or lack thereof) is limited.

In any context, A3 plays a key role in communication and learning processes within a project as it summarises data and thoughts in a direct, fast and focused way. It accompanies understanding and troubleshooting in a standardised manner, becoming a true thought discipline, aiding effectiveness and drastically reducing the use of reporting or laborious and often redundant presentations. However, learning to think, elaborate and communicate in A3 requires a lot of training and experience, which is frequently underestimated by most companies. According to some Japanese senseis it can take years to master and, above all, teach the art of A3 Management. This course aims to tackle and speed up the mastery of this important conceptual tool.
