Many companies underestimate the real impact of the new product development phase on the entire product life cycle. Approximately 70 to 80% of decisions are made which will permanently affect product costs, productive efficiency, supply chain impacts, maintenance, etc. at a stage lasting much less than the entire product life and which has minimal impact on the costs that the company will incur.

For this reason, leading companies around the world have found in many cases that  it’s wiser and more profitable to apply the Lean Thinking principles starting from the early stages of developing new products rather than simply introducing them later in the advanced production phase, where the benefits obtained are far more limited than they would be if Lean Thinking were adopted starting from the conception and development phases. This step is strategic in order to achieve lower development costs, reducing post-launch production modifications, reducing development times and reducing total life-cycle product costs.
